비가 심하게 내리던 지난 여름날, 창문 밖을 내다보고 있던 나의 시선은 문득 창문에 머문다. 유리에 달라붙은 물방울로 보이는 바깥은 다른 세상이고, 창문 프레임은 나의 시야를 규정한다. 창문은 비오는 풍경에 대한 나의 경험을 만든다. 투명한 매개물의 존재를 느낀다.

   침묵은 왜 투명한가? 침묵은 침묵 이외의 다른 존재를 드러내기 때문이다: 침묵은 비-침묵을 반사한다. 투명한 음악은 침묵이 그러하듯 비존재로 존재를 드러내는 음악이다.

투명한 음악은 스스로 투명해짐으로써 그 너머의 풍경을 드러낸다: 최소한의 제스처로 배경은 전경이 된다. 스스로의 자리를 다른 존재에 내어준다. 스스로를 주장하지 않고 다만 풍경에 조율한다. 풍경에 음악이 동조됨으로써 음악은 공명하고, 전파되어, 풍경 속으로 사라진다. 음악은 풍경이 되고 둘의 구분은 사라진다.

음악은 자신의 것을 비움으로써 투명해진다.

투명한 음악은 창문처럼 당신의 시야 어딘가, 풍경과 눈 사이에 존재하면서, 우리로 하여금 세계를 더욱 사려깊게 듣고 경험하도록 도와준다.

투명한 음악은 스스로 존재하지 않는다. 음악은 그것을 이끄는 풍경 뒤에 온다. 풍경은 언제나 선행한다. 풍경은 언제나 음악을 불러온다.

One heavy rainy day last summer, I was looking out the window and suddenly I took note of the window itself: raindrops hanging on to the glass manipulating the view and the window frame defining my sight. It shapes my experience of the rainscape. I noticed the transparent mediator.

Why is silence transparent? Because it discloses shadows and traces of the others; it reflects the non-silence. Transparent music, as silence does, brings out the non-being into being.

     Transparent music uncovers the landscape beyond itself by rendering itself transparent. With gestures as gentle as possible, we witness the moment when the background moves to the foreground, and vice versa. Transparent music yields its place to others. It never speaks for itself, but only attunes to the landscape. When music adjusts itself to the landscape, it resonates, transmits, and vanishes into the air. Music becomes the landscape and they are no longer separate.

By emptying out what belongs to itself, it becomes transparent.

Transparent music stands somewhere in your view, between your eyes and the scenery. Transparent music helps us listen with care and enter into a relationship with the sounds of the world.

  Transparent music doesn’t exist by itself. Music comes after the landscape. The landscape  always stands ahead. It is the landscape that always brings music.

It’s been a long time since 11’s last release. Long enough that I had to go and listen to that release to see what changes she might have made. Transparent Music is a piano-driven album that’s making a strong point through collaboration.

“skating” makes this point through the combination of piano and drums. The two speak in rhythms, but on the track the melody is a little less important because it’s about the use of space. To describe Transparent Music in a world would be piano. It’s the core of every part of the album. You could even describe the album as contemporary. Since the music is centered around the voice of the piano, you get sucked in quickly and 11 makes it obvious that you’re now in her world.

The tracks on Transparent Music are different based on if the piano is accompanied by drums. The track list arranges the music so you’re not sure what you might hear. I do feel like Transparent Music is a soundtrack to something. Each song fits a different mood and with ten songs, there’s a lot of ground that can be covered. The overall tone might be a little melancholy, but the music is really enjoyable to listen to. Hearing the audio story told by the piano is amazing. Tracks don’t use a heavy amount of repetition so it always feels like it’s moving forward.

The perspective that 11 takes on Transparent Music is very different from other music I’ve heard recently. She’s a talented pianist and the songs she composed are excellent. Piano is usually a supporting player in most music, but it’s the star for 11. Definitely take a listen and enjoy this amazing album.

크로스오버는 장르의 교차 혹은 결합을 의미한다. 하지만 1+1처럼 교차하는 장르가 보이면 감동을 주기 어렵다. 11의 [Transparent Music]은 업라이트 피아노와 드럼의 색다른 듀오 편성으로 만들어 미니멀리즘, 재즈, 클래식 등 다양한 장르의 가로지름을 통해 만든 음악을 담고 있다. 그런데 다양한 장르의 결합이 인위적인 느낌을 주지 않은 것은 그것이 연주자의 음악적 본능을 바탕으로 하고 있기 때문이었다. 이것이 앨범을 뛰어나게 했다.
